I think Karl Lagerfeld tried really hard to make this film overtly chic, and he might have been successful had he hired a writer to create a storyline and dialogue, but what Karl ended up with instead is a pretentious mess with a 1970s porn film acting style. Worst of all, Lagerfeld makes it look like Chanel stole all her ideas from her clients, from ropes of pearls to using tweed and jersey…
I’m afraid I have to agree. I was curious to see what he came up with, but when I watched it yesterday I was just sort of embarrassed; kept looking around to see if anyone was watching me watching that hot mess. The mish-mash of styles and Coco being “inspired” over and over. I had to shut it off halfway through.
Lagerfeld was quick to criticize all the other films about Chanel’s early life, so I assumed his film would be a rebuttal to all the misconceptions and inaccuracies about her, but its really the worst of the lot. It’s also not very well styled – I thought that at least Lagerfeld would get that right!
