Fashion Hall of Obscurity – Jeune Leique by Cherberg

This label may sound posh, but Cherberg was a Philadelphia-based company founded in 1956 by Howard and Spencer Cherashore and Bernard Rutberg – the ‘Cher’ and ‘berg’ from their last names were combined to create the company name. Cherberg made women’s clothes under the trademark name of ‘Jeune Leique’ which by some reports was supposed to mean Junior League, except that Leique is not French for league. Co-founder Bernard Rutberg retired in 1985, two years before the company ceased production, and died in 2012 at the age of 91.
